Mobile onboard retail and inventory management for passenger rail
Aramark Canada required a mobile point of sale and inventory management solution to support onboard retail and catering operations across a major Canadian passenger rail network. The programme needed to support day-to-day onboard selling, stock control and reporting across a large operational estate, while also working reliably in remote areas and variable-connectivity environments.
ECR was pleased to deliver RailPro – the latest mobile point of sale and inventory management solution designed for the day to day realities of rail operations. The platform combines onboard selling, payment processing, stock visibility and back-office reporting, giving front-line teams and head-office users a more joined-up operational view. The solution is delivered as a hosted Software-as-a-Service platform, with monitoring, support, service availability reporting, backup and disaster recovery built into the service model.
The system
The scope included onboard mobile point of sale for day-to-day retail activity, with support for start- and end-of-day processes and links to head office for management and reporting. It also included warehouse and inventory management to support depot and logistics operations, together with reporting and analytics through ECR's reporting suite. The solution was deployed on a large device estate, with around 500 devices and a minimum of 250 concurrent licences.
The implementation approach was structured around early requirements validation, configuration of onboard and head-office systems, integration and connectivity testing, and a controlled pilot ahead of wider go-live. ECR also delivered a train-the-trainer approach, enabling Aramark to cascade training across depot and onboard teams and support consistent adoption across a large operational workforce.
Security and resilience
The hosted service model includes defined commitments around security, data protection, availability, backup and disaster recovery. The programme is delivered in an AWS-hosted environment in Canada, with contractual commitments around resilience and service continuity. The solution is supported by ECR's ISO 27001 certified information security framework, helping meet the client's requirements for assurance and operational reliability.
Status
The solution is live and supporting Aramark's onboard retail operations across Canada, providing controlled onboard selling, improved stock visibility across onboard and depot operations, and reliable reporting to support operational decision-making. A second phase is planned to introduce customer-facing at-seat ordering via onboard Wi-Fi.
